What is pre-infusion?

Pre-infusion is a process where you gently soak the filter with your coffee in it, before giving the coffee your desired pressure with your tamper. You do this to ensure that when you brew coffee, the water penetrates evenly into the coffee beans, so that they have the same amount of water flowing through them during brewing.

If we are to compare pre-infusion with another coffee process, we can draw references to bloom pour.
