What is Café au lait?
Café au lait is French and means “coffee with milk”. A café au lait is made from one part coffee and one part hot milk. Some baristas add more milk than others. A café au lait is not frothy in consistency like a cappuccino, but is brewed to be an easy cup of coffee that can be enjoyed quickly.
In France, a café au lait is often served in a large, deep cup, and there’s a special reason for that. It allows you to dip a buttery, crumbly croissant into your coffee.
In Denmark, the translation is often: a filter coffee with a little cold milk. I slang: En færgelatte.
Hardly as exotic as the story of a buttered and crumbed croissant.
You’re welcome.
